By Nathaniel Cajuday

“Globe is taking the next step in its 5G journey as it opens up the network to a wide variety of possible use cases for customers using 5G Standalone (SA) technology.”

This is the statement of Globe Telecom after its announcement that it has successfully launched 5G Standalone technology through testing in a live setup in its facility in Valero, Makati City.

In the press release, Globe explained the difference between 5G and 5G SA: 5G is known for high-speed applications such as 4k and 8k video streaming, augmented and virtual reality, and ultra-fast internet served to deliver immersive content consumption. While 5G SA allows the adoption of new concepts and mission critical digital services such as industrial automation, remote surgery, and autonomous vehicles to name a few.

In 2019, Globe launched 5G broadband service in the country, the first 5G service in Southeast Asia, in partnership with Huawei Technologies Co Ltd.

And at the end of 2020, Globe reported that 5G coverage has seen hitting 80% of Metro Manila.

At the moment, in line with global deployments, Globe’s current 5G network is deployed via 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) architecture, which is the first phase of 5G that allows faster internet speeds. (Read More: Globe’s 917Ventures-incubated KodeGo Launches Salesforce Bootcamp)

Globe’s 5G SA service is not yet available to the public but has promised to open it to the public and extend to other parts of National Capital Region and other regions.

“Globe is creating new possibilities with 5G SA. We are all set to leverage these enablers to make our 5G value proposition more compelling and competitive. 5G SA will allow us to do more services for multiple industries with new business models,” said Ernest Cu, Globe President and CEO.

Globe, moreover, said that 5G SA will allow the company to achieve business velocity and agility, embrace digital practices, and realize operational efficiency in both consumer and enterprise sectors.

“As an industry leader, the company stands firm in its mission to enable Filipinos with innovative technologies and empower them in their life choices. 5G SA will enable our customers to experience better connectivity, enjoy new applications from 5G use cases, and connect new industries,” Cu added. “Globe is committed to upholding the United Nations Global Compact principles and contributing to 10 UN SDGs,” Globe concluded.
